A few friends and family members are holding fast to Windows 9X operating systems. It is getting to be a challenge when they ask me for assistance. No one seems to be supporting the OS anymore. It is hard to find drivers and other compatible software. It is also getting hard to remember how those systems work.
ComputerWorld agreed with this assessment. In a recent article they said:
No obsolete technology is in wider use than the 9x versions of Microsoft Corp.'s operating system. "Windows 9x is getting to be pretty much unsustainable," says Tony Iams, an analyst at D.H. Brown Associates Inc. in Port Chester, N.Y. Indeed, many companies have already migrated to Windows 2000 Professional to gain the reliability of an operating system built on the more stable NT kernel.
It is also true that the computers running Windows 9X are usually around five years old. Things have changed a lot in the past five years.
When someone works with me to upgrade to a new computer they are impressed with the new look, feel and performance of the system. If you have a Windows 9X machine and are thinking about making a gift to your favorite charity, let me know and I will assist you in getting a new system that is a great value.
